The opening day of the 4th Aleksandras Vanagas’ Conference is fast approaching. Its title Onyms in Space and Space in Onyms discloses and substancially correspond with the purpose of life and work of Aleksandras Vanagas – one of the Lithuanian Onomastics pioneers, Professor, Habilitated Doctor, Corresponding Member of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, the Laureate of the Lithuanian State Prize (1970), the Laureate of the Lithuanian State Science Prize (1993 –  together with Prof. Habil. Dr. Vitalija Maciejauskienė and Dr. Marija Razmukaitė). This year, Aleksandras Vanagas (August 12, 1934 – April 13, 1996) would have celebrated his 85th  anniversary.

His students and followers understand that the scholar’s research of the Lithuanian onomastics was and still is as significant as the Latvian scholar Janis Endzelyns, Polish scholar Kazimierz Rymut and other most prominent 20th century European onomasticians’ research into proper names in their native languages.

Aleksandras Vanagas was the most prominent researcher of Lithuanian hydronyms – their composition, origin and semantics – and also paid great attention to Lithuanian personal names. The scholar was one of the first Lithuanian onomasticians to start developing international relationships, and was associated with ICOS (International Council for Onomastics Sciences), which then was and still remains the leading organization that unites onomasticians worldwide. Aleksandras Vanagas’ works are being cited by almost all European onomasticians who have been studying the oldest layer of European water names. Vanagas’ works and his insights are really important to many gathered here, in this conference.

The goal of the Fourth International Aleksandras Vanagas’ Scientific Conference Onyms in Space and Space in Onyms is to bring together an international community of onomasticians interested in various aspects of onomastic research for the academic dialogue, to present different theories and methodologies for the analysis of proper names and exchange research experience.

The keynote speakers from Estonia, Latvia, Poland, Sweden, Hungary and Germany will present the latest trends in Onomastics as we care about the international space and our research in that space, as well as in the context of other European studies of proper names.

Researchers from 18 countries, including scholars of the Baltic studies resp. Baltic proper names, will also give presentations in the conference. They will discuss the problems encountered in researching proper names as specific lexical units and will present the latest research results. We invite all colleagues to the 4th Alexander Vanagas’ Conference at the Institute of the Lithuanian Language on November 7-8, 2019. We wish you an intensive exchange of ideas and productive work during the event!
